Desert Ice78 wrote:CCP, I don't want to mess this up and as I am one of those with download caps, I don't have 13GB of bandwidth to spare to download everything all over again, so: -
- I currently have one installation of Eve Online
- I currently run two instances of this one installation for my two accounts
- The new downloader says that its going to move/ copy? everything to a new shared folder
Questions:
- What is going to happen to my current installation (all 13.06 GB of it?)
- Are files now going to be duplicated or redundant due to everything being copied over to the new folder?
- Should I now copy a second installation of Eve Online to run my second account?
- How should I best proceed with running my two separate accounts?
- Ultimately how is this going to effect my bandwidth usage on a month by month basis?
The launcher will move all the resource files to the new shared cache location so you don't have to download that again. The stuff files will be deleted afterwards so you won't have duplicates lying around. Once the conversion process has finished the launcher will download anything that has changed, similar to what it's always done.
You don't need a second installation to run your second account - that will work the same as it did before.
Your bandwidth usage overall shouldn't change.

Oxigun wrote:As a user who has both multiple installs with varying settings and installs across multiple computers, I would like to know if anything is changing in the CCP/EVE AppData folder. It usually contains two folders, one for settings and one for cache.
Does this new DoD model remove the multiple cache folders and save oodles of space? Nothing has changed in the AppData folder, the settings and cache folders are there the same as before so multiple installs with different settings will work exactly as before.
What has changed is that the game assets are no longer in the EVE install folder but live in the shared resource cache instead.

Natya Mebelle wrote:CCP Atropos wrote:You'll have to patch the binary content, since you're using two separate installs, but the art assets and such should only be downloaded once. Alright! Thank you very much for your answers through these last days and your patience c: Are there any plans to merge the application data files, since they share a lot of redundancy as well? Is there a safe way to export the settings so I am down to a single client? I'm not seeing any difference in performance to run both clients from the same installation or from two different ones, other than being a bit worse than before the merging of shared files. So is there any other advantage to run two separate clients instead of booting from the same from your point of view, or are these changes meant to get rid of multiple installations altogether? Let's just say that this is on my radar - too early to talk about specific plans but I would really like it if players wouldn't have to mess with multiple installs to run multiple clients with different settings (or run on test servers).

Feels like a couple of minutes, switching toons is a right ball ache now :-( For a brand new install, and worse on a low bandwidth connection, this is probably true. Once the install has been running a bit it will not have that delay. CCP - would leaving an account logged in over night result in the full install being completed or would the account only download a new graphics resource when it is encountered? If not, there should be a AFK idle timer that kicks off a "filling" in download routine. There is a setting in the launcher for downloading everything. Restart the launcher after changing it, then leave it running to fetch those files.

But let's say I want to do a "low impact download", just sipping the install across, instead of DoD's micro-bursts or the full bore, racing EVERYTHING AT ONCE mode. Is it possible? At the moment, no - there are discussions going on changing the launcher to allow you to play while it-¦s downloading everything. That would get you more or less the behavior you describe.
Thank you for your feedback - our goal is to improve your game play experience, and feedback such as this is very important.
